Hydroxyl Radical Generation by the H2O2/CuII/Phenanthroline System under Both Neutral and Alkaline Conditions: An EPR/Spin-Trapping Investigation

چکیده

The copper–phenanthroline complex CuI(Phen)2 was the first artificial nuclease studied in biology. mechanism responsible for this activity involves CuII(Phen)2 and H2O2. Even if H2O2/Cu systems have been extensively biology oxidative chemistry, most of these studies were carried out at physiological pH only, little information is available on generation radicals by H2O2/CuII-Phen system. In context paper pulp bleaching to improve ability H2O2, system has investigated, mostly alkaline pH, more recently near-neutral case dyed cellulosic fibers. Hence, aims studying production with pHs. Using EPR/spin-trapping method, HO• formation monitored understand mechanisms involved. DMPO used as a spin-trap form DMPO–OH presence HO•, two scavengers compared identify origin observed adduct, nucleophilic addition water onto leads same adduct. H2O2 decomposition enhanced CuII–Phen (and only slightly CuSO4), reaching level similar Fenton reagent pH. This evidences role Phen, which improves effect CuII tuning electronic structure structural properties corresponding complexes.

Hydroxyl radical generation by photosystem II.

The photogeneration of hydroxyl radicals (OH(*)) in photosystem II (PSII) membranes was studied using EPR spin-trapping spectroscopy. Two kinetically distinguishable phases in the formation of the spin trap-hydroxyl (POBN-OH) adduct EPR signal were observed: the first phase (t(1/2) = 7.5 min) and the second phase (t(1/2) = 30 min). The generation of OH(*) was found to be suppressed in the absen...

Laboratory investigation of capillary trapping under mixed-wet conditions

[1] Remaining oil saturation established by waterflooding was measured in Indiana limestone in its original, water-wet state and under mixed-wet conditions established by adding organic acid to the oil phase. The porous plate technique was used to establish initial oil saturations ranging from Snwi1⁄4 0.23 to 0.93 under capillary-dominated conditions. For water-wet conditions, the residual oil ...

Characterization of free radical generation by xanthine oxidase. Evidence for hydroxyl radical generation.

Xanthine oxidase has been hypothesized to be an important source of biological free radical generation. The enzyme generates the superoxide radical, .O2- and has been widely applied as a .O2- generating system; however, the enzyme may also generate other forms of reduced oxygen. We have applied electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy using the spin trap 5,5'-dimethyl-1-pyrroline-N-ox...
